** something is suddenly gone —— spent, lost, or run away —— just like that
~~there it goes; just like that; poof, it's gone; money down the drain; gone in a flash
!! "Pop Goes the Weasel" is a nursery rhyme, a song, and a dance tune. One verse goes: Up and down the City Road / in and out of The Eagle / that's the way the money goes / pop goes the weasel. The Eagle was a run-down London pub near City Road. "Popping" was slang for pawning, while "weasel" likely comes from the rhyming slang "weasel and stoat" (coat) or "whistle and flute" (suit) —— or was a slang term for a pocketbook. The image is a drunk who spent all his money at the pub and went next door to pawn his coat for more drinks.
    >> After months of reckless spending, the economy is running on fumes -- then a private credit crisis hits, and pop goes the weasel.
